The railway bridge was designed by James Fraser, Engineer-in- Chief. Work began in June 1904, on concreted brick piers which were embedded two feet into the bedrock. In March 1906 Tulloch's Phoenix Iron Works began construction on the American truss design bridge, five iron spans on cast iron plates. Penrith rail bridge was completed by April 1907 and opened to trains on 2 June 1907.
